Melvin Mifsud, 18 from Rabat and a 15-year-old also from Rabat, admitted stealing a Hillman Hunter, a Ford Transit and a Datsun Bluebird from Rabat in August and September.

The two stole eight bags over two days – 17 and 18 September – containing items such as mobile phones, documents and cash. These ‘snatch and grabs’ took place in several locations, ranging from Sliema to Mellieha.

On 12 September the accused tried to steal an Austin Mini from Rabat. They also attempted to steal a Ford Cortina from Qormi on 16 September. On 28 August they tried to steal Michelle Greenway’s bag and on 18 September they tried to steal a bag to the detriment of Annette Vella. The accused injured Ms Vella slightly on the same day. A day before they also injured Cynthia Grixti slightly. The 15-year-old, who cannot be named since he is a minor, relapsed in view of

previous convictions.

Presiding magistrate Jacqueline Padovani Grima scolded the boys, warning them that each crime they admitted to carries a sentence of 13 months in prison. “Work it out,” she told them, “do you understand how much prison time you could be facing?”

Magistrate Padovani Grima granted Mifsud bail against a Lm5,000 personal guarantee and put him under house arrest. “If you even put one foot out of the house you are going straight to prison!” she said. The young man’s parents, present in court, said they were willing to make a sacrifice to stay at home to supervise their son and would call the prosecuting inspector if he steps out of line.

The 15-year-old boy’s tearful mother explained that his father is in hospital and no one would be home to watch over him. The magistrate therefore had no choice but to remand him in custody.

The case has been deferred for judgement and the defence attorneys Dr Ian Farrugia and Dr Richard Sladden asked for a pre-sentencing report to be drawn up.
