The curtain has been raised on the events to be held at the Manoel Theatre next season. The theatre’s artistic director Tony Cassar Darien explained that the variety of programmes, consisting of 130 shows, will suit every theatre-goer’s taste.

He spoke of the popular annual events like Teatru Unplugged and the Christmas pantomime. Novelty shows, such as the multi-media Solitudni Fil-Belt concert, will be incorporated into the programme along with plays produced by various drama companies such as MADC and Masquerade. Dance shows and musical recitals are also on the bill, as are performances by foreign artists.

The programme also includes a spotlight on an international theatrical personality, said Mr Cassar Darien. The first, to be held in January, will be on William Shakespeare. Two plays and a 15-day calendar of events will show the public the accessibility of his works, which seems to be a concept that has been lost over the years, he continued.

The Manoel Theatre is committed to giving its audiences quality performances and entertainment. In view of this, Theatre Manage-ment Committee chairman Wilfred Kenely spoke of the physical transformation the theatre complex is undergoing.

A number of important projects have begun over the past few weeks, he said. Instead of climbing many tiring flights of stairs, patrons attending performances at Sala Isouard will be able to use the lift which is due to be installed in the next few days.

Structural work is also being carried out and the project to

create new dressing rooms, and multi-purpose rehearsal and performance spaces backstage is currently in its first phase.

Mr Kenely also announced the installation of upgraded fire and safety equipment on the premises, guaranteeing additional safety while protecting the historical building from fire hazards.

Tourism and Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said the mix of cultural activities planned for the Manoel Theatre will draw a wide range of audiences.

The different genres of artistic performances allow people to appreciate different forms of art said Dr Zammit Dimech, remarking that the opportunity to watch varied performances makes people more open-minded.
