The event was organised by the Malta Tourism Authority whose chairman, Chris Grech, said the initiative was aimed at raising awareness of the business potential of these localities with Maltese tourism operators.

“It is very important for the local travel and tourism trade to be consistently aware of product improvements and developments as well as new packaging alternatives,” Mr Grech said. He added that the MTA had to be at the forefront and lead the process of facilitating improved business opportunities for all those involved in the tourism industry.

The objective of the tour, said Mr Grech, was to ensure how to best enjoy and use the historic assets the country enjoys and how to show them off to the foreigners who come to Malta for such an experience.

The tour began with a boat trip on the Europa II from Sliema to Cottonera. Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech, who addressed those on board, explained that for in recent years the Cottonera region has been undergoing a regeneration process.

He said this process was three-pronged: the rehabilitation and restoration of historical buildings, forts and fortifications; social projects aimed at the social regeneration of the three cities; and the Cottonera Waterfront project, which is being carried out by the private sector. This, said the minister, will see the harbour area of the three cities being turned into a Mecca of tourism-related activities.

Dr Zammit Dimech described the Cottonera region as “one living museum of history, culture and traditions”. He said that thanks to the Cottonera Rehabilitation Project, several historical buildings and fortifications such as the Notre Dame Gate, St Helen’s Gate, St Anne’s Gate and Couvre Porte had all been restored to their original splendour.

The Tourism Minister said that the local councils of the three cities were contributing a valuable share in this regeneration process. These councils are very active in the upkeep and cleanliness of the Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea localities, he said.

Upon arrival in Vittoriosa, the tourism operators disembarked and were given a tour of the major attractions that can make a visit to this part of the islands unique and memorable.

The tour also gave local handling agents an opportunity to evaluate the excellent business potential of the area.
