A quick visit to the area shows the general state of neglect of the place. The worst thing about it is that this area is one of the must-visit venues marketed with tourists.

Mention must also be made of the fact that owners of the boats who take tourists for a ride to see the beautiful caves also take these tourists for a ride with their money. Maltese citizens who have taken tourists to Wied iz-Zurrieq told this newspaper that fares change from day to day.

At the back of the creek at Wied iz-Zurrieq are a considerable number of car and bus tyres which were once used as fenders for the boats that take tourists to the Blue Grotto.

Also a real shame is the De Redin tower, which is supposed to be a police station but which is rarely open to the public. The tower is in a very precarious state and obviously many people dump their rubbish around it because there is no – or little – enforcement.

Readers said the authorities should ensure that this venue is kept clean at all times, especially since so many tourists go there on a daily basis.
