. The internet is very effective and useful for children to learn subjects with more practical examples and is also an important tool for teachers. However, like most good things, there is also a down side: internet exposes young children to material which is not suitable for them, including pornography and other illicit material. After investing heavily to provide computers and internet access in every classroom in every school, the Education Division has now embarked on a programme to educate children and their parents on how they can make the best possible use of this resource.Primary schools have one computer for every seven students while in secondary schools, there is a computer for every 15 students. Moreover, primary school teachers have each been given a laptop computer. All schools have access to the internet and by the end of this year, all students will have an email address and space to create their own website. The use of the internet will take place in the presence and under the supervision of the teacher. Students are personally responsible at all times when using the electronic information service. The transmission of any material in violation of the Maltese law or school policy is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, copyrighted material, threatening or obscene material or material protected by trade secret. Commercial activities for profit institutions are not acceptable. Use of product advertisement or political lobbying is also prohibited. Students and teachers will be given a pamphlet explaining how parents and children can use the internet more effectively and safely. The parents will also be asked to sign a form allowing their children to make use of information and communication technology equipment at school. Education Minister Louis Galea said he is proud that the Education Division was using its technical people to install software with which children using the internet at school will be protected from any form of illicit material. Moreover, emails being sent and received by the students are also scanned and controlled. He said that students can access thousands of sites. Dr Galea, however, stressed the importance of teaching students time management because students were spending too much time in front of the computer, mainly playing games and virtual wars. He said time management is very important and it is also important that they learn how to utilise their time effectively from when they are young.
