Speaking during a meeting for MLP councillors in Hamrun yesterday, Dr Sant said this attitude will be officially endorsed during the MLP congress which will be convening at the end of the month.

He said that the congress will be one of the most important activities the MLP has organised this year. “MLP councillors are committed to increasing and improving their contributions. The work-rate of MLP-controlled councils is much higher than those with a PN majority because the councillors themselves stick to their promises,” he said.

During the congress, avenues will be explored which can lead to more and better work by the councillors, as well as increasing regional cooperation.

Dr Sant said Labour councillors are focused on doing what needed to be done because they are there to serve the people. “The congress will also be looking into how the MLP can increase cooperation with non-governmental organisations,” he said.

The MLP had already shown the way forward in this respect during its term in government between 1996 and 1998, said Dr Sant, when it and various NGOs came up with a plan for the development of the south of Malta.

He said that councillors also needed to keep in contact with village, town and city residents in Malta and Gozo.

Also present at the meeting were secretary general Jason Micallef and MP Chris Cardona.
