The Pope addressed the conference through a live satellite video connection from the Vatican, as part of the International Convention of Priests’ programme. He spoke only the last part of his discourse, with Monsignor Leonardo Sandri reading the earlier part for him. Feeble, and struggling with every word, Pope John Paul said: “I give you my affectionate blessing,” at which the crowd burst into a standing ovation, with some priests calling out “Viva l-Papa!”

“The Virgin Mary remains a model which should inspire you,” he said. “She gave herself to the Lord’s will completely and made it the hallmark of her life, even during the difficult moment of Christ’s crucifixion.

“Refer to her whenever you are faced with difficulties in carrying out your duty. She will help you present to mankind the Church’s message.”

The Pope said that he was pleased to address such a significant spiritual gathering, held in the country that upholds the memory of St Paul.

He said that St Paul’s model should be emulated by all clergy in their mission. St Paul had relinquished his pride and became the servant of the Lord, he said. “The Lord invites you to be his apostles, most importantly by leading an exemplary life. It is up to you to amplify the word of the bible everywhere you go. Dear priests, if you let yourselves be captured by the Christ like Paul did, you too will be able to announce to the world the infinite mercy of the lord.”

The convention started on Monday evening with a presentation of the Church in Malta by Archbishop Joseph Mercieca, and is expected to come to a close in Gozo, this afternoon. Some 1,000 high-ranking clerics, from 283 dioceses in 81 countries, are taking part in the event.
