The money spent on Dar Malta is raising doubts about the government’s attitude and how genuine its efforts are to reduce waste and pay off the national debt. Mr Micallef said this is the reason why the Maltese are angry about the purchase of Dar Malta. This anger was justified last week at the meetings of the Public Accounts Committee.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi is saying that the refurbishment of Dar Malta will not cost more than Lm2.5 million. However, Mr Micallef pointed out that considering what happened with the Mater Dei hospital, what Dr Gonzi says is not credible.

The Prime Minister still did not specify whether the Maltese will have to pay extra taxes for the upper storeys of Dar Malta that the government is planning to rent out. Mr Micallef also pointed out that the ground floor – the most important floor in the building – was not bought as it had already been taken.

The Labour Party will continue to focus on what needs to be done, said Mr Micallef, who condemned the increasing number of personal attacks on Dr Alfred Sant.
