The movement issued a statement, signed by former prime ministers Dom Mintoff and Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici, urging Maltese-US migrants to lobby their favourite candidate for the US Presidential election to state that he will be observing Malta’s neutrality in the future and will not send anymore warships to the local harbours.

The presence of warships in Maltese ports is a fragrant violation of Malta’s neutrality and is in breach of the constitution, MAF said. MAF expects the government to explain under which arrangements it is allowing these ships to enter Maltese harbours. “The only information we have is from an official statement, made by President George W. Bush, in which he thanked former Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami for letting the US use the Maltese ports for their warships.”

The front is in possession of a letter, endorsed by various members of parliament, which clearly shows wide dissent against the present situation, the statement said. “So far we have never come across anyone who is not in agreement with our country’s neutrality.”

The Maltese people depend on the country’s neutrality more than any other country, in view of the islands’ size. The country would be annihilated should Malta be involved in a conflict where modern mass destruction weaponry is used.
