The trouble between a Somali group and an Eritrean group was apparently sparked off by women within the groups.
Twenty people were injured during the fight, with 13 being admitted to St Luke’s Hospital and another seven being treated for slight injuries at the Floriana Health Centre. No AFM personnel were injured.
A Jesuit Refugee Service representative who was inside the compound was held hostage for a while but was rescued due to the prompt action of two AFM officers.
The situation was brought under control and the police are investigating the matter.
