The spokesman said that while government had every interest in reaching agreement with Skanska, the whole issue depended on whether the company put on the table fresh and better proposals which justify the projected final costs, together with the necessary explanations to justify the variations.

“While remaining open to conclude these negotiations amicably, government will surely be insisting that the expenditure of public funds on the Mater Dei Hospital renders the best value for money and is fully accounted for,” said the spokesman.

In fact, Dr Gonzi has re-iterated time and time again that he will not have the wool pulled over his eyes and he will only give the green light to Skanska if they come up with a better offer that not only justifies the costs incurred, but would also mean value for money.

The issue had created much controversy, with Dr Gonzi accusing Labour leader Alfred Sant of undermining government’s position by making uncalled for comments in a parliamentary adjournment a few weeks back.

He said Dr Sant had deliberately tried to weaken the government’s position, in turn strengthening that of Skanska. He said that prior to Dr Sant’s parliamentary speech, he had been given indications which showed that Skanska and government had actually found common ground. However, Skanska then tabled an offer which Dr Gonzi branded “Absolutely unacceptable”. Dr Gonzi said he dismissed the offer without even looking further into the matter as it was not what he thought was fair.

Skanska officials tabled another offer very soon after Dr Gonzi’s rebuttal, which the PM said was “better, but still lacking”. Dr Gonzi is expecting Skanska to come up with a better offer today.
