For the second year running, 11 bays in Gozo and Comino were cleaned by the Ministry for Gozo with the help of deep-sea divers of the Gozitan branch of the Red Cross and Victoria Scouts Group.

The bays cleaned this year were Xlendi, Marsalforn, Xwejni, Qbajjar, Ramla l-Hamra, Dahlet Qorrot, Hondoq ir-Rummien, il-Qawra in Dwejra and Blue Lagoon and St Marija’s Bay in Comino.

The largest amount of rubbish was found in the Blue Lagoon where 740 beer and water bottles, 64 car tyres and two tyres from a large vehicle were collected from the sea.

Places where barbeques were held were extremely dirty with rubbish such as glass and plastic bottles, pieces of metal, rope, chains and tins. One of the cleanest bays was Ramla Il-Hamra .

After the success of these two clean-up campaigns, this initiative will be repeated next year. The aim of the clean-up campaign is to keep the beaches clean and also to create awareness among the Maltese and Gozitans.
