Malta Air Charter has provided helicopter transportation linking the two islands of Malta and Gozo since 1990 servicing the business and travelling community with an efficient and fast link between the two islands.

The MAC operation has carried approximately 30,000 – 40,000 passengers per year having reached a peak of 64,000 passengers in 1994.

The operation became unsustainable for the Air Malta Group as the demand for the service declined and never managed to reach adequate levels.

Malta Air Charter operated with a fleet of two Russian built 26-seater MI-8 helicopters that have served the company well providing certain cost advantages in the rentals of the aircraft and crews.

These helicopters however do not comply with JAR OPS 3 specifications and can no longer be used for such an operation.

Air Malta has investigated various alternatives but the solution proved elusive.

Therefore some time ago the Company decided to withdraw from this route to complement its overall strategy to retrench out of those activities which do not focus on its core operations.
