The police constable was one of 11 people who formed a prostitution ring that was broken in July this year. The people were all charged with offences regarding the forced prostitution of two Russian women. Some, like this man, admitted the crimes. The man, who cannot be named due to a court order, was given a two-year jail term suspended after he admitted trafficking and conspiring to traffic two Russian women for them to be forced into prostitution.

He was also guilty of assisting another two men organise a brothel and making a living off money made through prostitution. Since the policeman had committed crimes he was duty-bound to prevent, he was also interdicted for five years.

The appeal’s court not only changed his suspended sentence to a jail term, but also interdicted him perpetually. The court upheld the Attorney General’s appeal that the minimum jail term for such crimes committed by a public officer should be three years. The court noted a suspended sentence can only be given for a two-year jail term and therefore the man was sent to prison and perpetually interdicted.
