Sensuous elegance and athletic exuberance are the hallmarks of Mavin Khoo Dance, whose five dancers return in a new production, Chandra/Luna, inspired by Indian and European notions of the moon and its influence on human life.
Malaysian-born Mavin Khoo, “one of the UK’s most exciting dancers” (London Evening Standard) will lead his company of five dancers at the Manoel Theatre in an entertaining, elegant and finely danced performance, which brings together the dance forms of India and Europe in an original and enjoyable harmony. The music ranges from ancient Indian poetry to French Impressionist harp (Satie and Debussy), from a specially composed soundscore by Andy Pink, to traditional Carnatic Song and Dvorak opera, sound-mixed by international club DJs PerQX and Matt Ross.
Embracing ballet and modern dance with the sinuous power of classical Indian dance and appealing to a wide range of audiences, Chandra/Luna shows the moon in all its guises, using exciting innovative choreography by Laurent Cavanna and Liz Lea, a new solo for Khoo by the distinguished CV Chandrasekhar from Madras and a new company finale by Mavin Khoo himself.

St Monica’s Choir

This year, Malta's polyphonic choir is celebrating it's 40th anniversary since it was founded in 1964. For the accomplishment of this milestone the choir has to thank its numerous choristers and past choristers that kept the choir going on, its numerous experiences and awards that served as motivation during the years and last but not least its incredible directress Sr Beniamina Portelli who founded the choir 40 years ago and still has it under her grips!
To celebrate, the choir is organising a grand concert which will be in aid of the abandoned children in the care of the Augustinian Sisters in the Philippines. The Circle of Life is going to be a spectacular choral concert featuring Claudette Pace as special guest, with a live band under the direction of Simone Attard which will include also dancing acts. As the title suggests, this concert will feature music from animated movies like The Lion King, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid, Hercules, Mulan.... too many to mention!

Anton Chekhov’s Il-Gawwija (Chaika)
12, 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21 November
Teatru Ad Hoc are staging the well known classic work by the Russian author Anton Chekhov. The Maltese translation as well as the artistic direction, has been entrusted to Immanuel Mifsud, himself a poet and author as well as a theatre maker. Collaborating with him on this project to bring Chekhov’s masterpiece to life, are some of Malta’s finest actors – Manuel Cauchi, Monica Attard, Jes Camilleri, Stephanie Farrugia, Michael Tabone, Ninette Micallef, Stefan Cachia Zammit, among others.
The Seagull is one of the classics of world theatre. Even people who are unfamiliar with Chekhov’s works can probably cite the famous opening line: “Why do you always wear black?” This year is the centenary anniversary since Chekhov’s death in 1904, and most theatres round the world have staged one of his major plays as a tribute to this great author, whose legacy in theatre, is perhaps only second to that of Shakespeare.
