This year marks the 25th anniversary of Malta's Freedom from the British forces, an important landmark in Malta's history. In order to commemorate this event, an evening on the theme of freedom was successfully organised last month at the CNL theatre which was well attended and it was decided that the play be produced once more.

The play which consists of one act, penned by Alfred Sant, explores the many interpretations that the theme freedom can be given. March 31, 1979 for the Grixti family meant living the last moments of the life of their father, Nikol who made a living running a bazaar shop in the Cottonera area; and on the other hand, the birth of their country in a new political reality. Every character is passing through personal changes which affect their inner thoughts and their actions. There are changes which are the result of a personal choice and others which are the force of circumstance. But, either way, it always takes courage to adapt to new realities.

The play is a study of characters who, influenced by their personal background are also moulded by the social reality they were brought up in. But they are ultimately, very realistic people with positive characteristics and also serious flaws.

The cast is made up of Anthony Ellul, Simone Zammit, Chris X. Grech, Mariella Aquilina and Isabelle Scicluna under the direction of Joyce Grech.
