The event took place at 8.30pm on 16 April when Buttigieg kicked Mr Mizzi’s back door and broke the glass. He was also swearing and using other obscene language.

The judgement was handed down last Thursday by magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona.

In parliament yesterday evening, Dr Sant heavily criticised the judgement, saying the court should be ashamed of such a judgement, adding that it was “unacceptable”.

To add insult to injury, Dr Sant said, the magistrate also recommended that the accused does not lose his job. “It is as if we have first class and second class citizens in this country. It is disgusting,” he said.

He mentioned another case in which three people had been found guilty of assaulting Tarcisio Mifsud, the financial controller of the Enemalta Corporation, and were only fined Lm25.

He said the Labour Parliamentary Group expresses its solidarity with Mr Mizzi and his family.
