“Everyone is striving to create a better society in which every person is fulfilled,” she said. “This is not an easy task to achieve and it becomes very challenging when discussing issues related to people with special needs.”

Mrs D’Amato explained that although her secretariat is mainly responsible for the elderly, the running of two services beneficial to disabled people also fall under her care.

Accessibility is an issue that concerns the secretariat. The government has made this point a priority and this is demonstrated by the investment in low-floor buses.

Although there is a long way to go to completely satisfy the needs of the disabled, the government has endorsed an all-inclusive policy to promote a society that encompasses everyone, she said.

“We have looked for ways to facilitate the lives of those with special needs by embarking on policies, programmes and initiatives that mitigate difficulties and focus on abilities rather than disabilities,” Mrs D’Amato continued.

She concluded by thanking all those who have contributed to generating awareness and encourage sensitivity among the general public.
