Meeting On health and safety issues

Malta Independent Thursday, 18 November 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The objective of the meeting was to raise a number of issues and to suggest areas for development. The meeting was held at the offices of the IHS in Msida.

Dr Drake was given a brief overview of the history and activities undertaken by the Institute. A discussion ensued on the need to explore ways to create synergies between the Authority and private operators in the sector of Occupational Health and Safety.

The IHS officials noted that while many private companies acknowledged the need to have their workforce better equipped and trained to work in a safer and healthier environment, it was likewise vital for the Authority to enforce the law and to ensure a better understanding by the work force of the needs to minimise risks and down time caused by accidents. In this regard, on-going education and training on occupational health and safety is key and that this is an area of growth which has to be further developed to address the different needs of today and the challenges of tomorrow.
