Law Students want more practice and a base in Valletta to be closer to the law courts

Malta Independent Wednesday, 24 November 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The ceremony, held at the University Sports Hall began with a rowdy group of graduates chanting “Ma taghmlu xejn mal-kors tal-ligi“ (You can do nothing against the Law course). The hall was packed with fresh graduates and their parents as years of hard studying came to a glorious end in this much awaited ceremony.

Mr Ellul said that he preferred to focus on hard facts rather than dwelling on frivolous issues such as the “almost” Lm 10 graduation fee and the fact that after six years of toil, students are graduating in a gym. He said that the University and the government must work hand in hand to create the right situation and the right opportunities for all.

Malta should be the ideal place to study and ultimately work, although it is a fact that we are experiencing the beginning of a brain drain, Mr Ellul insisted. He said that we cannot continue to focus on frivolous political issues but must all pull the same rope and work so that the University overcomes its severe problems, thereby once again fulfilling the function that it has always been created for.

Mr Ellul said that there should be a more conducive environment for lecturers so that they can go about their work in the right environment, and this was not only related to the financial package being offered. He said that the financial situation at the University must be addressed, making a reference to the poor state of the library that was an essential tool for all the students at University.

Mr Ellul added that it would be an excellent idea to have a proper library on judicial matters which would be ideal for all those studying law.

Mr Ellul said that the University must move towards a more self-sustainable environment. He said that local students are indeed fortunate to have not only free access but a stipend, a situation that was unheard of in foreign countries. However, we must all make sacrifices if we are to ensure the University’s survival, Mr Ellul insisted.

On faculty matters, Mr Ellul said that the law course should offer more practical experience whilst making suggestions that the Chamber of Advocates should be more involved in the course to offer advice on how to work in the future. He added that there should be a Law Faculty in Valletta so that there will be more access for students to the Law Courts.

Concluding, Mr Ellul thanked all lecturers, faculty officers, administration staff and parents for the invaluable help throughout the long years of University life. The students were also addressed by Jonathan Farrugia, a Theology graduate who called for more cooperation between the administration and students while pledging that new graduates will continue to be a beacon for the future of the country.
