Berlusconi Resigns as Milan president

Malta Independent Wednesday, 29 December 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Silvio Berlusconi resigned as president of Italian soccer club Milan yesterday to conform with laws that prohibit the country’s premier from running private enterprises while in office.

Berlusconi took control of Milan in 1986 and made the club one of the best in Europe. They were European Champions four times and won seven Italian league titles under Berlusconi.

A statement from the club said no immediate successor had been named.

Vice president Adriano Galliani has run the club since Berlusconi became Italy’s leader in 2001.
