Mellieha obtained an easy win against a depleted Naxxar who had four regulars missing through suspension.

Mellieha scored two quick goals between the 4th and 7th minutes; Manuel Vagnoli crossed to Andy Bonanno who shot past Naxxar’s keeper David Vella and David Cauchi headed in after a well-taken flag kick by David Fenech.

The woodwork denied Mellieha a third goal on 30 minutes. From an Adrian Fenech cross David Fenech hit the upright with Vella beaten and from Vagnoli’s rebound the ball hit the bar and was eventually cleared to safety.

Two minutes after the restart Mellieha scored a third goal through Vagnoli who made no mistake from inside the area after an Adrian Fenech perfect cross.

On 60 minutes Mellieha substitute Eros Galea committed the miss-of-the-match when he drove out from two metres after a Vagnoli cross.

Seven minutes before the end Bonanno obtained his personal brace and his side’s fourth goal after a Vagnoli cross.

Tarxien managed to turn defeat into victory after being 0-1 in arrears. Zurrieq enjoyed the lion’s share of exchanges in the first period in which they scored.

On 19 minutes Zurrieq were rewarded for their efforts. Saliba crossed to Abdilla who scored with a rising shot. A free kick by Abdilla was deflected to a corner.

In Tarxien’s only attack in the first period they obtained the equaliser; Matthew Schembri crossed to Terence Vella who shot past Zurrieq’s keeper Anthony Camilleri.

Just before the break a well-taken freekick by Abdilla found no takers in Tarxien’s area.

A minute after the restart Tarxien took the lead; Schembri crossed to Michael Zammit who headed in from close range to make it 2-1.

Farrugia had to dive and a save to corner a shot by Abdilla after being put through by Leonard Zammit and also saved a free kick shot by Abdilla.

On 68 minutes Robert Ghigo should have equalised for Zurrieq but from a Saliba cross he drove over the bar with only Farrugia to beat.

Four minutes from time Tarxien sealed the issue through Michael Zammit who netted with a low shot after a Terence Vella through ball.
