Mosta’s winning streak came to an abrupt end yesterday when an organised San Gwann side managed to hold Paul Zammit’s boys to a fair 1-1 draw.

Mosta did much of the running but San Gwann were always dangerous in their attacks. The result leaves both sides with an outside chance for a promotion place even though the points lost yesterday could have their toll at the end of the season.

The first half was played mainly in midfield with Mosta always showing the better ideas, but the San Gwann defence, with Spiteri and Vella in good form, cleared all the danger thrown at it.

On 19 minutes one of Mosta’s best players, Bilocca, shot slightly wide, and ten minutes later, it was Asciak’s turn to miss the target.

San Gwann went close with a long range shot from Decesare with the ball missing the base of the upright by inches. Mosta’s best chance came in the 41st minute when Bilocca was brought down by goalkeeper Bartolo, but the same goalkeeper made amends when he blocked the resultant penalty taken by Philip Camilleri.

Mosta increased the pressure in the dying minutes but Bartolo saved a Chibueze header and Loughborough was on the right spot to block a point blank shot from Okonkwo.

In the second half, Bartolo was again instrumental saving a Bilocca shot and on 52 minutes San Gwann took the lead. Mosta goalkeeper Farrugia could only partially save a fierce drive by Decesare and Achukwu was on hand to shoot home the rebound.

Two minutes later San Gwann went close again with a Cuschieri first timer that was blocked by Farrugia, and Mosta hit back with shots from Okonkwo and Bilocca but Bartolo was on the alert to halt the danger.

However Mosta obtained a deserved equaliser on 75 minutes when Roderick Asciak finished off in style an excellent move between Philip Camilleri and Bryan Agius.

Mosta piled the pressure in the dying minutes of the game, but were saved by their goalkeeper Farrugia when he managed to block a Sciberras shot who was completely unmarked in front of goal.
