Basketball: women’s team

They won a bronze medal at the Promotion Cup in Andorra where they beat Andorra, Azerbaijan, Scotland and Armenia and lost against Iceland. The team also qualified to take part in the Commonwealth Games. Dorianne Galea was the captain and the other team members were Lucienne Bezzina, Joselle Cardona, Alexis Darmanin, Irene Farrugia, Caroline Fenech, Josephine Grima, Kirsten Micallef, Nadia Mifsud, Doreen Parnis and Sandra Schembri Wismayer.

Bowling team

Placed second in the Mediterranean Challenge in Turkey. The team was composed of Sue Abela, Melissa Anastasi, Kenneth Arpa and Brian Farrugia.

Sailing – Elusive crew

The yacht Elusive, skippered by Arthur Podesta, finished first among the Maltese participants in the Middle Sea Race where they ended fourth overall among the 41 contestants and second in the IRC category, Class B, from among 24 boats. Arthur Podesta’s crew included Maya, Aaron and Christoph Podesta, Carlo Cicca, Andrea Piocella, Andrew Borg, Yasmin Degiorgio, Andrew Sullivan and Mark Vella.

Rugby national team

Finished second in the European Championship (third division) winning three matches and losing only once. Had a good start in the World Cup qualifiers winning against Switzerland in Geneva, though then they lost to Poland at home.

Snooker national team

Winners of the European Championship in Riga, Latvia, an event held for the first time, replacing the Continental Cup. The team consisted of Alex Borg, captain, Duncan Bezzina and Simon Zammit.
