Badminton: Daniel Abdilla And Albert Bezzina on top in Division Two

The Singles section of this competition is now gradually drawing to its close.

In Division 2A, Daniel Abdilla (B'Kara Medairco) ended his commitments with two wins to preserve his unbeaten record as well as his leadership of the table, having won nine of the ten matches played and drawn the remaining one.

Maria Borg (Shuttles BC) follows in second place, with six wins and three draws on her record. Her only defeat was sustained in the second round against division leader Daniel Abdilla, with whom she had drawn their first round encounter.

The following are the latest Division 2A results:

The final table reads as follows: Daniel Abdilla 28 points; Maria Borg 21; Avner Vella 16; Edmund De Giovanni 14; Samuel Cali 3; Rachel Attard 2.

In Division 2B, Albert Bezzina (B'Kara Medairco) notched another win to end his commitments unbeaten at the top of the table with six wins and two draws from the eight fixtures played.

Team mate Adrian Chetcuti follows in second place, with five wins and two draws. His only defeat was against division leader Albert Bezzina, with whom he had drawn their first round fixture.

The final table reads as follows: Albert Bezzina 20 points; Adrian Chetcuti 17; Christopher Spiteri 9; Fiorella Farrugia 7; Joanne Vella 3.

Divisions 2A and 2B will now continue with the play-offs, over the best of three sets, on the 13th February.

The winner of Division 2A, Daniel Abdilla, will play the runner-up of Division 2B, Adrian Chetcuti. Similarly, the winner of Division 2B, Albert Bezzina, will play the runner-up of Division 2A, Maria Borg. The winners of these two fixtures will then face each other for the Division 2 title.

In Division 3, Ivan Salomone (B'Kara Medairco) is still unbeaten at the top of the provisional table, with the maximum 21 points after the seven matches played. James Bugeja (Shuttles BC) follows six points adrift in second place with 15 points, with five wins from the eight fixtures played so far. The two face each other in a direct encounter next Sunday.

In Division 4, Mathilde Friggieri and Maria Mizzi (both of B'Kara Medairco) jointly lead the provisional table with 12 points each, having both won four of the five matches played so far.

With the remaining two fixtures being played next Sunday, the title race is still wide open; an unexpected slip could be detrimental to the contenders.

The provisional fourth division table currently reads as follows: Mathilde Friggieri and Maria Mizzi 12 points; Jahel Briffa and Yvette Zarb 9; Jeanella Grech 6; Stephanie Meilak and Sean Mifsud 4; Jan Cutajar 0.

The H2Only League will now continue next Sunday with additional fixtures from Divisions 3 and 4 of the Singles League as well as from Divisions 1 and 2 of the Doubles League.
