Angela Galea, Robert Ebejer, Rugby team and Benji Borg scoop other awards
William Chetcuti of the Shooting Federation was yesterday named as Malta's Sportsman of the Year for 2004.
The other awards went as follows: Swimmer Angela Galea took the Sportswoman of the Year, ASA president Robert Ebejer was named as the Official of the Year, the Rugby national side was voted as the Team of the Year and sailor Benji Borg won the Under 17 Athlete of the Year award.
There were also nominations for Daniela Borg and Stephen Fenech of the Malta Wheelchair Dancesport Association as the Disabled Athletes of the Year.
Young shooter Chetcuti, who placed a creditable ninth at the Olympic Games in Athens after a shoot-off, polled 306 votes, well ahead of second placed Alex Borg (snooker) who obtained 214 votes. Third was athlete Darren Gilford on 168, fourth was footballer Stefan Giglio with 146 and fifth sailor Mario Aquilina on 145.

Sportswoman: 1. Angela Galea (swimming) 223; 2. Maria Mifsud Bonnici (triathlon) 213; 3. Melissa Anastasi (bowling) 182; 4. Lisa Camenzuli (tennis) 180; 5. Sue Abela (bowling) 165.
Team of the Year: 1. Rugby national team 274; 2. Basketball women's national team 223; 3. Snooker national team 211; 4. Sailing (Elusive crew) 167; 5. Bowling national team 121.
Official of the Year: 1. Robert Ebejer (Waterpolo/swimming) 235; 2. Envic Galea (judo) 219; 3. Charles Mifsud (weightlifting) 200; 4. Peter Valentino (sailing) 196; 5. Dr Joe Mifsud (football) 141.
U-17 Athlete of the Year: 1. Benji Borg (sailing) 234; 2. Matthew Asciak (tennis) 220; 3. Divinia Mangion (swimming) 208; 4. Roderick Muscat (cycling) 176; 5. Tiziana Carannante (bowling) 148.
Apart from these awards, there was also a special award for that journalist who has made a name for himself during his career in sport. This went to 87-year-old photo-reporter Charles Fava, who was still active until a few weeks ago.
The best activity award went to the FISEC Games. Louis Borg, director of the Games was presented with the Award.
