Local Sport: Skolasport, a springboard for children

Malta Independent Friday, 11 February 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Skolaport's second term has just started and Malta's energetic children are still participating with determination and enthusiasm in the Saturday programme. Kellogg's is sponsoring Skolasport for the sixth consecutive year.

Skolasport has more than 1,000 members. In order to save on public funds, the Maltese Council for Sports avoids spending money on advertising and steps up its efforts on direct marketing.

Just a few slight changes were made this year in the syllabus offered. While offering recreational and sport activities for everyone, Skolasport is collaborating with the National Sport Associations and clubs to create a good, interactive rapport between the children and a particular sport discipline.

In fact, during these coming weeks, both the Rugby national coach, Damian Neill, and the Baseball coach, Patrick Pace, will be teaching children the rules of the game. The KMS is presently collaborating with the Squash Association and the Malta Amateur Athletic Association in view of creating more programmes too.

"Right now, the objective of Skolasport is to improve the quality of the physical activity itself. While Kellogg's helps us to offer an invaluable service to all children in the form of financial assistance, it is important that parents and educators understand the significance of physical activity for health, and the importance of motivation. The learning becomes more effective when the children's desire to exercise grows and when the exercise is fun and playful," said Tanya Zahra, Skolasport co-ordinator.
