The work to build a campsite in Ghajn Tuffieha, which will provide facilities for 3,500 people, is now at an advanced stage and should be completed by May.

This was revealed by Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit when he made a tour of the 60-hectare site yesterday.

Mr Zammit said that the site will have all the necessary facilities and will also include the construction of a theatre, a football ground and a massive reservoir capable of storing around half-a-million gallons of water.

He said that all the work on site is being carried out by members of the Works Division and that a policy of optimum land and material use is being employed throughout the operation.

The Minister acknowledged that the work on the campsite had stopped for some time, due to other pressing projects in which the Ministry was involved, but now everything was back in full swing. He revealed that the site will feature extensive landscaping and the use of rubble walls will also add to the indigenous features of the area.

Mr Zammit revealed that about 650 trees and 800 shrubs and plants have been planted to create a harmonious and nature-friendly environment.

He said that the project should serve as a magnet for boy scouts who currently do not have such a large area in which they can camp freely with all the necessary resources close to hand.
