La Salle were made to fight till the very end as Kavallieri managed to produce one of their best performances this year. La Salle were off to a flying start as they were comfortably in the lead with a 6-0 scoreline. Kavallieri made a weak reaction which enabled La Salle to hold on to their six-goal lead until half time.

The second half featured a brave comeback by Kavallieri who were close to obtaining a surprising draw. Midway through the second half, La Salle were still enjoying their six-goal lead: however Kavallieri were slowly taking control.

Little by little, Kavallieri were dangerously moving closer to La Salle who seemed to be a little stunned. La Salle maintained the lead as Ramon Bondin scored the decisive goal to take La Salle to a definite two-goal lead.

Kavallieri also had the chance to get a goal back. La Salle goalkeeper Andrew Mifsud had a long pass intercepted by Kavallieri who tried to take advantage: however, the Lasallian goalkeeper made amends to his mistakes with two great saves to deny Kavallieri in the dying moments of the match.

Ian Turban scored eight for La Salle while Max Mifsud was Kavallieri’s top scorer with five.

Depiro 18

La Salle B managed a convincing win against a depleted Depiro side who had several key players missing. La Salle immediately showed their intentions and had a 3-0 lead after just 150 seconds of play.

Depiro made a good comeback as they reduced their deficit to one goal after 10 minutes. From then on, however, La Salle took full control of the match as they proved that they were superior to Depiro on the day. Christian McClean scored a ‘buzzer beater’ to give La Salle a comfortable six-goal lead.

In the second half, La Salle increased their lead to 10 goals and this led to their coach, Alan Grima, to try out all his young players. La Salle’s youngsters responded well to their coach’s call as they gave their opponents a hard time, even though they were almost half their size and had half their experience.

La Salle finished off the game with some well taken goals by Alessandro Zerafa and some exceptional saves by Josef Camilleri in goal. Christian McClean scored nine goals for La Salle B while Clayton Cassar hit five for Depiro.

In a strictly one-sided match, Aloysians had no trouble securing the three points as they beat Kavallieri in their first match of the second round. The first half saw Aloysians struggling to score as they only led 2-0 with 15 minutes on the clock. Once they started scoring though, there was no stopping them.

The second half saw a slightly better performance by Kavallieri but Aloysians were in a class of their own as they managed to score 16 goals. Aloysians’ win was highlighted by some good goals from Brenda Camilleri, Tessabelle Sultana and Mathilde Friggieri as Danielle Grima was providing some good assists for her teammates. Brenda Camilleri scored 11 for Aloysians whilst Marie Louise Aquilina scored two for Kavallieri.

La Salle A 13

La Salle A managed to edge through to earn three vital points in their championship campaign as they beat La Salle B in a very close match.

The first half didn’t offer spectacular handball as both sides couldn’t break the deadlock for a whole 15 minutes. It was dynamic duo Candy Spiteri and Stephanie Caruana who managed to take La Salle A to a 3-0 lead with 8 minutes remaining from the first half. La Salle B forced a reaction however La Salle A maintained their three-goal advantage.

In the second half, both teams were determined to improve their performances and this was seen immediately. The match was very close as La Salle B were reducing their deficit constantly; however La Salle A never let their opponents gain ground on them. La Salle A scored three consecutive goals to create a four-goal lead. La Salle B got two goals back however it wasn’t enough as La Salle A took home the points. Candy Spiteri scored five for La Salle A whilst Bernardette Vassallo also scored five for La Salle B.
