Malta champion Alex Borg of |Melita Band Club, Msida, won the fourth and final ranking tournament of the season sponsored by Tivoli Confectionery which came to an end on Friday at St. Joseph Band Club, Hamrun.

In the final, he beat Simon Zammit of Jesmond SC, Hamrun, 5-3. It was Borg’s second tournament win of the season with Joe Grech and Arthur Cachia winning the other two.

Borg took a 4-0 lead going into the mid-session interval, compiling breaks of 73, 60 and 78. On the resumption, however, Zammit made the final more interesting by winning the next three frames and had a chance to force a decider before he missed a long brown giving Borg the opportunity to pot brown and blue for the match.

The final was controlled by referee Charles Camilleri.

At the end of the match, Dr David Farrugia Sacco, President of the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association, presented the finalists with the prizes.

On the ranking list, Borg now has 4,650 points followed by Simon Zammit with 3,450, Joe Grech with 3,300 and Arthur Cachia who is in fourth place with 2,900.

Meanwhile this week the final matches from the second round of the Premier National Snooker Championships are being played while Saturday sees the commencement of the three international tournaments which will be organised by the MBSA at the Dolmen Resort Hotel, Qawra.

These are: on 5th and 6th March the Mediterranean Snooker Cup, between 7th and 12th March, the European Team Snooker Championships and between the 13th and 20th March the IBSF World Billiards Championships.

The general public is invited to attend and give its support to the local players in these championships. Admission for all the three events will be free of charge.
