Hamrun duly passed another test, to jump back to the top of the league ladder. Depiro provided good opposition as both teams opted for a fast game. Liberty’s tall players made the difference underneath the boards.

Both sides had some missing players.

It was a balanced match at the start as Depiro had Peter Shoults sinking two treys, and just leading 12-11. The lead then changed hands several times till the end of the session with Liberty prevailing and leading by a hoop, at 21-19.

In the second session Depiro tied the game twice before Liberty went on a 27-23 lead. Depiro’s fast play once more helped them to draw level twice more but Hamrun’s direct play brought them results and some good zone penetration helped them on to a 46-38 advantage at the interval in a high-scoring game.

After the break Hamrun extended their lead with a 9-0 run and an Omar Said trey. Depiro’s reply wasn’t that convincing and Liberty went on to a 63-45 lead. When it seemed that Depiro had faded away they came back at the end of the session with an 8-0 run and a David Agius trey. After three sessions it was a 68-57 match.

The last was slow in starting, as Liberty held on to their lead. Depiro’s efforts didn’t bring them any nearer and time passed away with a certain lack of points. Hamrun controlled till the end to go back to the top of the standings again.
