23 young but gallant ’Optimist Class’ sailors took to the water over a cold weekend last month, to contest the Fire-Tech Regatta organised by the Malta Young Sailors Club.

All competitors in this Class were under-16 years of age, the youngest of whom being seven-year-old Karl Miggiani while six members of the fleet had only started sailing last summer after following a sailing course for new-comers organised by the MYSC.

Karl Cremona won the Class event followed by William Camilleri in second and by Sean Borg in third place.

The Optimist Cadet Class was won by Thomas Zammit Tabona with Sarah Manduca second and young Edward Fleri Soler in third place.

Concurrently with the Optimist Class racing there were two Laser classes’ races. In the Laser Radial Class Andrew Selvagi placed first followed by Maya Podesta and first in the Laser 4.7 class was Matthew Fleri Soler with Marc Calascione second and Aaron Staniland third.

At the end of a most enjoyable racing weekend a presentation was held at the club in St. Paul’s Bay where Simon Camilleri, on behalf of Fire-Tech, presented the trophies to the various winners.

The next racing appointment on the Malta Young Sailors Club sailing calendar is the Gill Foundation Day Regatta on 20 March which will coincide with the MYSC eighth anniversary. This will be a ranking regatta and is being sponsored is Gill Gauci Borda Ltd.
