I expect a clearer picture of what one should expect in the remaining matches after today’s important Valletta-Sliema clash.

In fact, the Premier League is far from decided, and even though at present it seems as if Birkirkara and Hibernians are almost out of the race, the result of this match could bring both clubs once again into contention.

Such is the importance of the match between the leaders and the second placed team, separated by just one point with eight matches having yet to be played.

A victory for the Wanderers will certainly give Edward Aquilina’s side a big push ahead in their efforts to clinch a third consecutive title win, but a draw or a victory for Valletta could open the issue wide, provided Birkirkara and Hibernians win their weekend matches against Marsaxlokk and Floriana respectively.

With so many direct matches remaining to be played it is obvious that there will be no early decision as to who will be the title winner, but I believe that the race at present is limited to Sliema and Valletta and today’s match could, therefore, bring out a clearer picture of what to expect in the second round.

Both sides will be looking forward to achieve the three points at stake. Even Sliema, who lead Valletta by one point, are aware that a victory will extend their lead over their rivals to four points and keep Hibernians and Birkirkara six and seven points adrift (at least) and with a huge mountain to climb.

The citizens have a small psychological edge as they managed to beat the Blues 3-2 in the last match between the two clubs in the first phase. With Massimo Grima in such exceptional form at present and provided Gilbert Agius produces his best form, Valletta could prove to be a tough obstacle for the Blues.

Yet, Sliema, with Joe Brincat back in their line-up after suspension, should be a very hard nut to crack. Sliema will probably remain without the services of Orosco Anonam but with Doncic and Woods up front, they can give a lot of worries to the Valletta defence.

In today’s first match, Birkirkara must win against Marsaxlokk if they are to keep their very slim hopes alive.

The Stripes are still rueing the big chance missed last week when they conceded a last-gasp penalty from which Sliema equalised. It would have been a different story had the Stripes beaten Sliema, both for themselves, and also for Valletta and Hibernians.

Against Marsaxlokk, who have Ochei suspended, the Stripes should start as favourites but it is only pertinent to note that Birkirkara have yet to beat the southern seasiders this season in the league after figuring in two 1-1 draws.

Tomorrow, Hibernians should also be able to overcome bottom-placed Floriana to maintain their challenge for the title. They have the advantage of knowing the result of the Valletta-Sliema match and will therefore be aware of what they have to do although the three points will always be their primary aim.

Like Marsaxlokk, Floriana are still searching for their first point in the Championship Pool, although they were somewhat unlucky to have lost against Valletta through a 96th minute goal from Massimo Grima.
