Senglea A 2
Mqabba 2
Mqabba and Senglea figured in a highly interesting draw in this top of the table clash, between the best two sides of the competition. The result is a fair one and Mqabba maintain the three point lead over their rivals.
Mqabba were better all round but Senglea were very dangerous on the break, with their striker Timmy Thomas lethal in front of goal. For Mqabba Busuttil and Briffa stood out, with Anywanna, goal apart, having a quite morning, thanks mainly to Babolayefa’s good display.
Mqabba were superior in the early stages with Busuttil and Marlon Briffa in evidence. Anywanna was very effective and gave a very good helping hand even in midfield. Senglea however were well placed at the back and operated well in their fast breaks.
Mqabba goalkeeper Kris Calleja was not at his best in the first half with some very best sorties. Mqabba’s first chance came on the 8th minute when Albert Busuttil was denied by a fine Attard save.
On 15 minutes the Mqabba defence was caught on the wrong foot from a long ball from the Senglea defence. Goalkeeper Calleja miss-timed his sortie but Timmy Thomas’ lob smashed against the crossbar.
On 26 minutes Mqabba deservedly took the lead with a good move on the right by Marlon Briffa who crossed to the unmarked Anywanna in front of goal who easily tapped the ball in. Ten minutes later Senglea were back on level terms when from a McKay freekick, Kenneth Abela nodded down to Timmy Thomas who first timed beautifully in the corner of the net.
The second half was more balanced and Senglea went ahead on 61 minutes when from a Darren Grech cross, Kennth Abela headed to Timmy Thomas who mad no mistake from two metres to score his second goal of the match.
However Mqabba immediately equalised when Albert Busuttil went through on the left and from the goal line gave an inviting pass to Marlon Briffa who shot low into the corner of the net.
Mqabba insisted and Briffa tested Attard with a good try from just inside the box. However Senglea had two scoring near the end of the match, first with an Erin Azzopardi solo effort going over the bar, and in the dying minutes a good freekick by Darren Grech slightly missed the target.
