La Salle have managed to keep hold of their promotion league title after Aloysians’ slipped against Kavallieri. Depiro seemed to be a hard nut to crack for La Salle as they were off to a flying start and took a 2-0 advantage.

It was only after eight minutes that La Salle could break the deadlock thanks to Ian Turban who had a superlative performance on the day. Depiro were fighting hard to stay in the game and were trailing by two after 20 minutes of play. However, it was La Salle who took control of the game and broke away to take a four goal lead before half time.

In the second half, La Salle were having a vintage performance as Depiro struggled hard to score. Once again, it was Ian Turban who stole the scene on the day as he swept Depiro’s defence off their feet with his swift attacks and accurate shots at goal.

La Salle led by 11 goals with three minutes left on the clock: however, Depiro got two goals back as they kept on trying their best till the end. Brendan Cascun was Depiro’s best scorer with four goals while Ian Turban topped La Salle’s scoring tally with 10 goals.

Kavallieri 21

Aloysians 20

Aloysians failed to keep up the pressure after they were beaten by Kavallieri by the odd goal. Aloysians immediately started the game uphill as they only had six players available.

Virtually, Aloysians were playing with five players as they had two goalkeepers and one of them had to be a court player on the day. Nevertheless, Kavallieri didn’t take full advantage of this situation and Aloysians took a comfortable four-goal advantage midway through the first half.

Aloysians suffered another blow when their left wing Robert Formosa who had just arrived, joined his team mates to play. Only a few seconds later, the referees had to send off Formosa after Aloysians officials had failed to register him in the squad. Aloysians kept on playing with six players and enjoyed a three goal lead before half time.

In the second half, Kavallieri were determined to turn the tables round and had some good chances thanks to Daniel Tabone and Max Mifsud. Both players helped Kavallieri reduce the deficit to one goal whilst Keith Bartolo was vital between Kavallieri’s posts as he saved all three penalties given against his team.

To add insult to injury, Aloysians’ left winger Neville Borg was injured with few minutes left from the game and therefore Aloysians had to play with five players. Inevitably, Aloysians saw their three goal lead vanish as Kavallieri scored four consecutive goals to obtain an important victory.

Philip Mifsud was Aloysians’ top scorer with 14 goals while Daniel Tabone scored eight for Kavallieri.
