St George's obtained three precious points to go temporarily third in the table. The win against a San Gwann side reduced to ten players in the last 30 minutes was a deserved one, and now San Gwann are in deep relegation trouble.

St George's were better in all departments especially in midfield, where they built their success. However the Saints led by Edward Darmanin missed some glaring scoring chances and their win should have been of larger proportions.

San Gwann who started the match without Sandro Zammit Fava, Andre Decesare, and the suspended Wilfred Spiteri, had a dream start when they forged ahead after only four minutes. From a Cuschieri freekick, Penza nodded down to the unmarked Alan Borg who shot home from close range.

St George's, however, were in splendid shape and they immediately took control of the midfield sector with Darmanin showing very good skills. As usual Ewurun was a constant menace with his speed, even though he missed a sitter just before half time.

On nine minutes St George's obtained the equaliser when Darmanin was floored by Borg, and from the resultant penalty the same Darmanin made no mistake.

The Saints insisted on the attack as San Gwann had no answer to their opponents' rhythm. And on 24 minutes it was no surprise that St George's took the lead, when from a Darmanin cross from the left, it was captain Chris Agius, who scored in his own net in an attempt to clear the ball. This goal baffled San Gwann, and St George's missed an incredible opportunity four minutes later.

Heathcliff Schembri had an impressive run on the left and passed to the completely unmarked Trevor Thomas who shot high with an open goal at his mercy.

Just before the end it was Ewurun's turn to miss a similar incredible chance in front of goal following a good run by Patrick Muscat on the left flank.

In the second half St George's were less impressive but were still better than their opponents and operated mainly with swift breaks. On 53 minutes Ewurun tested Bartolo, and seven minutes later San Gwann were reduced to ten players when Chris Agius was sent off for his second bookable offence.

With this superiority St George's controlled their opponents and San Gwann were only dangerous with two freekicks by Loughborough, both missing the crossbar. San Gwann's best chance came to Alan Borg whose shot was brilliantly saved by Andrea Gatt.

St George's missed their last chance in the 89th minute when Ewurun dribbled past goalkeeper Bartolo and crossed to substitute Ivan Camilleri whose point blank shot was blocked on the fatal line by Stacey Vella.
