Following this result, the Spartans consolidated fourth place on 29 points from 16 games standing a good chance for promotion next season.
The first half was a balanced affair with Hamrun creating the first occasions. Balzan keeper Luke Mallia saved on Charles Zammit, a Refalo free kick shot missed the upright and a cross shot by Gylmour Micallef also missed the upright.
Eric Mangion crossed to Donald Caruana but Spartans' keeper Ryan Mangion saved his shot. After a free kick by Chris Cacciattolo, Mangion saved a Caruana header and also saved a rebound by the same player after a Wayne Muscat shot was partially cleared.
Hamrun reacted with a cross by Mead Mifsud, which was cleared by a defender and Mallia then saved on Micallef. Just before the half time whistle Hamrun forged ahead. Warren Muscat tripped Shawn Farrugia, for which he was shown a yellow card, and from Refalo's freekick, Dalton Caruana headed in from inside the area with the Balzan defenders doing the standstill act.
The Spartans doubled on three minutes after the restart when a shot by Refalo was partially cleared and Farrugia scored the rebound with a rising shot.
Spartans' keeper Mangion had to tip the ball over the bar off a free kick shot by Cacciatolo. On 59 minutes Hamrun were reduced to ten men as Refalo was shown a red card for retaliation.
Substitute David Frendo put Caruana through but he skied the ball over Balzan's bar..

The Blues managed to attain full points from 14 games. They fully deserved the verdict as they created more occasions throughout the 60 minutes. Greens' keeper Kyle Gerada saved his side form a heavier defeat with some good saves.
The Blues went straight on the offensive. Miguel Ciantar put Karl Magro through but he drove well off target and Gerada saved in two attempts on Ciantar.
In a Floriana counter attack, Orianski Buhagiar crossed to Neville Mifsud and the latter missed the upright with his shot.
A cross by Karl Saliba finished over Floriana's bar, a shot by Kane Farrugia missed the upright and Gerada foiled Ciantar with a timely sortie after a Mark Scerri through ball.
At the other end, a free kick shot by Mifsud missed the bar by inches with Blues' keeper Jeremy Alden beaten.
The Blues resumed their pressure on the Greens' fort. Valerio Mottola square-passed to Stephen Azzopardi but he skied the ball when well placed. From a Ciantar well taken flag kick the ball was cleared on the line and from a Mark Scerri free kick Gerada partially saved and the ball was cleared.
Sliema resumed their pressure after the restart. Scerri put Mottola through but Gerada saved his shot. The goalie later saved on Scerri after a Mottola cross.
Alden then saved a free kick by Owen Bugeja. On 38 minutes Sliema opened the score through Mottola after a Karl Magro cross. Ciantar then pounced on a faulty clearance but he drove over the bar.
In a Greens' rare attack, Buhagiar put Nathaniel Ebejer through but he missed the upright and in the first minute of added time Sliema scored their second goal when Scerri pounced on a faulty clearance and netted from 20 metres.
