General Workers Union deputy general secretary Manwel Micallef yesterday sued Il-Mument for libel following an article which Mr Micallef felt was slanderous. The article was published in the newspaper last Sunday.
Mr Micallef felt libelled by the article written under the nom-de-plum Stordut who, according to Mr Micallef, claimed that union officials have a licence to do as they like.
Mr Micallef said the article in the nationalist newspaper does not conform to reality and was intended to tarnish his reputation.
Yesterday’s libel suit comes a few days after that filed against Net TV. In its evening news bulletin on 27 March, Net TV had reported that Mr Micallef had written in it-Torca that union officials have the right to abuse.
Mr Micallef’s article was an analysis of the recent dispute which arose between the union, the Enemalta Corporation and the government over the legality or otherwise of the directives the union had ordered in the corporation.
As was the case with the libel suit against Net TV, yesterday’s case was submitted by the GWU’s lawyer, Dr Aron Mifsud Bonnici.
