The MAAA has felt the need to organise more races solely for veteran athletes. The ever-increasing number of athletes in this category prompted this.

A programme of events for road races and Track and Field events has already been launched. The next event that will be held is a 10K road race scheduled for Sunday 17 April in the picturesque village of Marsascala. The race will start at 8.30 am.

The event is open to all men born on or before 17 April 1965 and all women born on or before 17 April 1970. The competition will be run under the rules and regulations of the World Association of Veteran Athletes. (WAVA)

A commemorative medal will be presented to all those who finish the race and cash prizes will be presented to those male and female athletes who register the best technical performance as follows:

Best technical performance Lm 60.00, 2nd best technical performance Lm 40.00, 3rd best technical performance Lm 20.00.

The Hy-Tek computer programme will calculate technical performances according to the WAVA age graded tables.

Trophies will be given to the winner in each five-year age category from 35 years till 80 years.

The first placed Maltese technical performance, both male and female, will be awarded an air ticket to participate in the ninth European Veteran Non-Stadia Championships to be held in Algarve, Portugal between 13 and 15 May. These tickets are not transferable and if the winner does not accept to attend and participate the ticket will be given to the second placed Maltese athlete.

The race, which will be held over two identical laps, starts from near the Jerma Palace Hotel, Marsascala and proceeds left towards St. Thomas Bay. The runners will then make their way towards the centre of the village, running along the fishponds.

On reaching the central square, they should go up the road and turn right into St. Anne’s Street towards the church. On arriving at the Church square they should turn left and go up La Sengle Road for the first two blocks and turn right (into Buzbiez Road) and back towards the church. From there they should proceed along the sea promenade towards the Jerma Palace Hotel where they should start the second lap of the race. The finish is again in front of the hotel.

The presentation of prizes will be held after the race.

The entry fee is Lm3 and the applications will be received up to Wednesday 13 April. The results will be mailed to all participants.
