Two men should be awarded a total of Lm5,000 after the Injustices Tribunal ruled in their favour and declared they had suffered a career injustice at the hands of the cultural and works department.
John Pace filed a court application claiming he was passed over for the post of assistant cultural organiser within the cultural department in May 1987, while Joseph Meli declared he was denied a promotion within the works department and not paid for the overtime he had worked between 1992 and 1995.
Despite his relevant qualifications, Mr Pace was not appointed assistant cultural organiser and Mr Meli was passed over for a promotion although he had provided efficient service and carried his share of responsibility.
The Injustices Tribunal ruled in the men’s favour and Mr Meli was awarded Lm2,000 for the injustice he suffered. The cultural director was advised to appoint Mr Pace assistant cultural director retroactive to 1993. If this cannot be done, the man should be awarded Lm3,000 in compensation.
The court was presided over by Magistrate Michael Mallia.
