Bowling – Mediterranean Challenge Cup

Malta Independent Tuesday, 12 April 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The Eden SuperBowl will this week be hosting its second international tournament in the space of two weeks as, after last week’s second annual Malta Youth Open, the Malta Tenpin Bowling Association is organising the Mediterranean Challenge Cup VIII, which will be held between Thursday and Saturday.

Eight Mediterranean countries, namely Cyprus, Gibraltar, Greece, Israel, Italy, San Marino, Spain and, of course, Malta, will be competing in this event, commonly known as ‘The Medicup’. It returns to Malta in commemoration of the MTBA’s 30th anniversary.

The Medicup was last held here in 1999 and Malta has a glowing record of success throughout the history of the event, most recently in the seventh edition in Rome last year where our team of Brian Farrugia, Kenneth Arpa, Melissa Anastasi and Sue Abela walked off as overall winners of the tournament.

The 2005 team again features Arpa and Abela who are joined by Medicup first timers Mark Spiteri and Lorraine Casha, the four earning the right to represent their country in the recently completed qualifying tournament also organised by the MTBA.

Proceedings begin on Thursday morning with an opening ceremony featuring all eight delegations being held at the SuperBowl, and th the second daye teams will also get their first chance to train on the tournament lanes during an official practice session. Competition begins on Friday morning with six games in the singles event, which is split into male and female categories, as is the doubles event which will take place on Friday afternoon.

Saturday will see the final event of the tournament, the all important 4-man team competition, again held over six games. Each participant’s individual performance throughout the three events that make up the Medicup will govern the male and female ‘All Events’ classifications.

The Medicup would not be possible without the support of sponsors Easy Forex, Middlesea Valletta Life and Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport.

The public is welcome to follow the progress of the tournament live at the Eden SuperBowl, while all results will be posted at www.edenleisure.com/superbowl (Tournaments section), as well as www.mtba.cjb.net
