Bulgaria 15

Malta 23

Malta’s national rugby team obtained an impressive result in Sofia to force a play-off with denmark for the World Cup 2007 qualifications.

After last week’s defeat at the hands of Serbia Montenegro at the Hibs Ground Kordin the Maltese needed the win in Sofia against Bulgaria to finish third in Pool D.

The Maltese had a brilliant first half with tries from Dominic Busuttil, Joe Sultana, John Dimmond, and Mark Cuschieri with the Bulgarians unable to cope with the Maltese boys. Malta led 20-3 at half time.

However the expected Bulgarian reaction came by in the second period, but the Maltese held out to defend their lead till the end winning 23-15.

The Maltese scored a conversion from John Dimmond, and penalties from Jamie Caruana and the same John Dimmond

The Maltese will now have to face Denmark, who came second in Pool B, in a play-off that will be held in mid-May, for a place in the next phase.
