Table-Tennis: Genovese Regains the national title

Malta Independent Wednesday, 27 April 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Mario Genovese regained the national singles title by beating Edward Baldacchino 4-2 in a very close and interesting final.

In the ladies sector, Johanna Grech continued with her supremacy by beating Roxanne Palla in the singles final.

In the Junior/Cadet events 14 year old Matthew Micallef showed his improvement made during these last three months by entering in three finals (Under18, under15 and boys Doubles) winning the under 15 title.

In the Men’s Doubles event a bad start from the experienced pair Alex Anastasi and Joe Borg Cardona losing the first two sets 11-5,11-4, proved to be too much for them to win against the best two Maltese players.

A comeback was made in the third game but lost narrowly in the fourth game by 13-11. It was a deserved win for the champions.

In the Veterans over 40 years event there was one of the most exciting finals of the evening. With two defenders Alex Anastasi and Paul Dawson on the table the game was very interesting with both players trying to close the point on every chance available.

Paul Dawson had the edge in the middle of the match with precise corner shots and blocks which had no reply from Alex. The match ended in favour of Paul Dawson by a close score 13-11 in the sixth game. Well done to Paul Dawson for his first major honour.
