The first round of the “San Michel” team doubles tournament, currently being played at Tennis Club Kordin and which is being sponsored by Simonds Farsons Cisk through their product ‘San Michel” table water, came to an end on Sunday. This is one week behind schedule due to the postponement caused by the death of His Holiness Pope John Paul II and bad weather.
This round produced some scintillating tennis in all categories but especially, in the “A” category, which is being contested by many established players in both Ladies’ and Men’s sections.
For the first four weekends of this first round all the scores were very close except, on the second day, when team ‘A’ beat team ‘D’ to the tune of 15-7. The same score was repeated on the last day of the first round when teams ‘A’ and ‘B’ trounced teams ‘F’ and ‘C’.
The beginning of the second round finds Team ‘D’ of Dave Elden leading the Table on 65 points closely followed by Team ‘B’ on 62 points.
The other four teams are not far behind and, mathematically, all of them can reach the semi-finals of this hectic tournament. For sure, all those who attend the club on Saturdays and Sundays during the coming five weekends are going to witness great competition and enthralling matches between the six teams taking part in their quest to secure one of the first four places to reach the Semi-Finals stage.
Placings: Team ‘D’ (D.Elden) 65 points; Team ‘B’ (D.Portelli) 62pts; Team ‘A’(R.D’Alessandro) 58pts.; Team ‘E’(A. Vella Bonnici)51pts; Team ‘C’ (J. Vella ) 49 pts; Team ‘F’ ( S. Farrugia) 45 pts.
