San Gwann grabbed the points in atypical end of season match, with goal-mouth actions coming at regular intervals. The game was very interesting and pleasant to watch, and apart from the four goals scored, Marsa missed a penalty and three players were sent off.
San Gwann who on Saturday assured themselves of their status in this division played a brilliant attacking first half, and controlled their opponents in the second, especially after being reduced to nine players. Foreigner Achukwu played a blinder in a defensive position in the second half.
Marsa showed the better ideas in the first portion of the second half, but they missed the golden opportunity of equalising when Martin missed from the penalty spot, and they never recovered to go out empty handed.
The match played at a fast pace had a brilliant start with San Gwann going ahead after only five minutes when Penza shot home from close range.
Two minutes later went close with a Brandon Zammit cross shot that hit the crossbar.
Marsa’s goalkeeper Spiteri started his string of brilliant saves denying Cuschieri and Borg. On 18 minutes Marsa’s Joseph Casha and San Gwann’s Loughborough were sent off by referee Alan Sant for dissent. Marsa had two scoring opportunities mid-way through but Grima’s shot went wide and Cutajar’s shot was blocked by Bartolo.
On 35 minutes San Gwann doubled the score when Achukwu passed to Andrew Decesare who dribbled past two defenders before shooting low into the net. Two minutes later San Gwann went very close to their third goal, but Marsa’s goalkeeper Spiteri saved a certain goal blocking Acukwu’s point blank shot.
In the second half Marsa were the better team dominating for long stretches. On 58 minutes Marsa pulled one back through Lee Grima who shot home from close range. Marsa surged forward and obtained a penalty seven minutes later when Decesare floored Zammit, and with Decesare sent off for dissent. But from the resultant penalty, Martin’s shot was well saved by Bartolo.
San Gwann introduced Zammit Fava to strengthen their midfield, and with four minutes to go San Gwann sealed the issue when Achukwu gave a long ball to Chris Cuschieri who lobbed beautifully over the onrushing Spiteri.
