Football – First Division: Mqabba End season on a high note

Malta Independent Monday, 9 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Mqabba finished their commitments on a high note beat St. George’s with a three goal margin. The match never reached high standards with Mqabba controlling the Saints pressure, and hitting back in swift counter breaks.

With this win Mqabba are now solely in second place and must wait for Mosta’s last match against San Gwann to know their fate.

The first half was played at a very slow pace with St. George’s playing better in the early minutes, with Thomas, Darmanin and Ewurun keeping the Mqabba rearguard on the alert

On 36 minutes Busuttil shot high following a good Muscat-Anywanna move. However three minutes later Mqabba opened the score when a Briffa cross was headed by Anywanna to Chris Borg who scored from close range.

In the second half St. George’s went in search of the equaliser but Mqabba defended well and sealed the issue with two late goals. With ten minutes to go Anywanna shot from more than 30 metres and the Saints’ substitute goalkeeper Camilleri was surprisingly beaten.

In injury time, Mqabba’s win became flattering when Justin Felice score from three metres following a good run by Anywanna.
