Games For European Small States: Six more athletes added to Maltese contingent

Six more athletes were yesterday evening accepted to form part of the Maltese contingent for the forthcoming Games for Euroepan Small Nations in Andorra between 30 May and 4 June.

They are judokas Michael Zahra and Eileen Portelli and athletes Jean Paul Callus, Antonella Chouhal, Jeandre Mallia and Karl Farrugia. They had all been given up to 15 May to reached the MQSs.

Their participation was confirmed yesterday during a meeting of the MOC Executive Committee, which however, did not accept requests for participation from some others who failed to reach the standard requested.

In all, there will now be 63 athletes in the Maltese contingent, as follows:

Athletics 19 athletes; Basketball 12, Cycling 5, Judo 8, Shooting 6, Swimming 4, Table-Tennis 3, Tennis 4, Taekwondo 2.

As is widely known, some athletes, including the cyclists, the tennis and table-tennis players will be travelling next Tuesday to get acclimatised with the high altitude. Some others will travel on Thursday and the bulk will be travelling on Sunday 29 May, a day prior to the opening ceremony at the Andorra La Vella Stadium.
