Three bronze medals from Michael Zahra, Reuben Micallef and Yvgeny Ulanov

Maltese woman judoka Marcon Bezzina stunned a packed Prat Gran Pavilion when she defeated home favourite Carmen Fernandez to gift Malta its second gold medal of the Games.

Bezzina defeated Andorra’s Fernandez in the final of the women’s under 57kg.

Bezzina took sweet revenge for her defeat in Malta when the Andorran opponent beat the Maltese judoka on the home soil.

Once again, Judo proved to be a happy hunting ground for Malta: apart from Marcon Bezzina winning gold, there was bronze for Michael Zahra, Reuben Micallef and Yvgeny Ulanov.

Michael Zahra won the bronze final of the men’s over-100kg judo competition by an ippon in the repechage.

“I am pretty excited to have won this unexpected medal. I still cannot believe my eyes that it just happened to me”, an excited Marcon Bezzina told the press at the end of her final.
