First Defeat for Malta in U/18 International Tournament

Competing in the 6th European Tournament (U/18 Youth and Amateur National Teams) which is being held in Campania Italy, Malta and Greece shared the spoils in a goalless draw yesterday.

It was Malta second's outing where they are playing in Group 'A' with Italy, Greece and Northern Ireland.

On Tuesday Malta lost 3-1 to Italy, The Maltese started badly and were two goals down inside the first four minutes through goals from Matteo Gritti and Domenico Petitti.

After those opening stages play was more or less balanced as efforts from Mark Gauci, Jonathan Pearson, Mark Galea and Andrew Scerri also kept the opposing goalkeeper on the alert.

Shortly into the second half Francesco Marga made it 3-0. Still, Malta kept fighting and were rewarded with a consolation goal ten minutes from time when Justin Grioli netted off a fine move.

On Tuesday, Greece and N. Ireland ended 1-1 while yesterday the other tie saw Italy and N. Ireland share two goals.

Italy have four points, followed by Greece and N. Ireland, on two each, while Malta are on one point. There are two groups and two teams from each group qualify for the semi-finals.

The Group matches come to an end tomorrow Friday 3 June, with Malta facing Northern Ireland.

The final and the match for third place are scheduled for next Sunday.
