Yesterday proved to be another memorable day at the Encamp Sports Centre as Malta’s table-tennis squad registered more memorable results.

Andrezej Makowski and Simon Gerada crushed all their opponents as they won all their qualifying matches yesterday to finish at the top of their respective groups.

The results mean that they have avoided each other so far in the competition and they can only meet in the final if they overcome their semi-final obstacles.

The two registered exceptionally good results which were the following:

Group A: Makowski-Romain Loulerge (Monaco) 3-0; Makowski-Vannucci (San Marino) 3-1; Makowski-Dominik Maexer (Liechtenstein) 3-0; Makowski-Patrick Rodriguez Chalais 3-0; Makowski-Gudmundur Stephensen 3-2.

Group B: Gerada-Tentoni (San Marino) 3-0; Gerada-Airlindo De Sousa (Luxembourg) 3-1; Gerada-Sylvain Franceschi (Andorra) 3-0; Gerada-Florian Prosper (Monaco) 3-0; Gerada-Peter Frommelt (Liechtenstein) 3-1.

In the meantime, Johanna Grech had a difficult start in the women’s singles competition despite registering a victory in the women’s singles competition.

In fact she started with a 3-1 win against Gudrun Bjornsdottir of Iceland but then went on to suffer three consecutive defeats: 3-0 against Carole Hartmann, Louiza Kourea of Cyprus and Yan Chimei of San Marino.

The table-tennis programme continues with another full day of competition today.
